In the Experienced Course, you’ll be introduced to ‘Sculling’ for the first time. This means each rower uses two oars. Sculling demands more coordination and technique, making it a challenging next step in your rowing journey. You’ll still be rowing in a stable rowing boat, and of course, you’ll continue to receive all the guidance from our skilled coaches. You’ve got this! By the end of this course:

  • Rowing technique theory and practice with sculling
  • Understanding equipment and handling rowing boats
  • Safety and navigation rules

Upon successfully completing the course, you can progress to the Advanced Course!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rowing course and how does it work?

Six times per year we start our rowing course. You can register individually and we’ll schedule you in a team with other participants. You can also register together. Please let us know any teammates on the registration form and we’ll make sure that you are placed together!

Do lessons proceed in bad weather?

Absolutely! Rowing is an outdoor sport and we’ll proceed in all weather, even rain and wind. If conditions are so bad that we can’t go on the water, we’ll arrange an indoor program in our rowing tank and on our rowing machines.

Should I be able to swim?

To join any rowing activity at TopRow, you’ll need to have swimming diploma A or equivalent swimming skills.

Does Toprow offer rowing courses for kids?

Yes! For children aged 10 to 14 years we have special youth rowing courses. You can read more about this under the heading ‘Courses’. During the school holidays we organize ‘Splashweeks’ – an entire week filled with games, sports and goofing around on, in and around the river.
Swimming diplomas are of course required.

What is the refund policy?

When signing up for the rowing course you agree to the Terms and Conditions. Once you are scheduled for the course there is no refund of the amount possible. The withdrawal of the course is possible up to 2 weeks before the course starts. We will charge an amount of €25,- administration fees in that case.

What time am I expected to arrive for a course?

We ask participants to be fully prepared and ready to go on the water 10 minutes prior to the start of the course. Participants should arrive, dressed in their rowing attire, and report to the main instructor 10 minutes before the lesson begins. The instructor will introduce you to the other participants in your course group.

Outfit: what type of clothing should i wear for rowing?

The best clothing for rowing is elastic, soft, and breathable, paired with a simple pair of sports shoes. Loose pants or t-shirts can get caught in the wheels under the moving rowing seats. Loose tops can snag on the oars. Generally, it’s recommended to dress as if you’re going for a run; with tight-fitting pants and a shirt/jacket.

It’s also a good idea to bring:

  • a water bottle
  • a hat or cap (to protect against the sun or rain)
  • sunscreen
